Selangor FC officially announces the appointment of Kim Pan-gon as the new Head Coach of the Red Giants’ senior squad.

A familiar figure in Malaysian football, the Korean Republic–born head coach previously succeeded in improving the national team’s FIFA ranking from 154th to 134th between 2022 and 2024, with the team reaching its highest position of 130th in November 2023. Under his leadership, Malaysia also qualified for the AFC Asian Cup on merit for the first time since 1980, a historic achievement that helped restore the nation’s footballing image on the Asian stage.

Prior to that, Kim Pan-gon recorded significant success in Hong Kong with South China AA, where he guided the club to the Hong Kong First Division League title in 2009 and was named Coach of the Season. He also played an important role in improving the performance of the Hong Kong national team. In 2024, he returned to South Korea and joined Ulsan HD FC midway through the season, before helping the club secure a third consecutive K League 1 title, becoming the first individual to win the league with Ulsan HD FC as both a player and a head coach.

“My decision to join Selangor FC is based on my confidence in the club’s vision and commitment. The club has demonstrated exceptional dedication and a deep understanding of the philosophy and leadership that I will bring. Furthermore, the club’s targets and objectives align with my personal aspirations as a coach,” said Kim Pan-gon.

“My coaching philosophy has always been player-focused. I emphasize high-quality training, clear tactical planning, and detailed opponent analysis to ensure the team is fully prepared. A balanced squad structure comprising both experienced and young players, along with discipline, professionalism, focus, and teamwork, forms the foundation for each individual to perform their role optimally. Off the pitch, I will continue to provide encouragement and motivation so that the players compete together as a united team,” he said.

Praising the strong support of the Red Giants’ supporters, Kim Pan-gon stated, “I truly appreciate the deep sense of pride and unwavering support shown by Selangor FC supporters, particularly at MBPJ Stadium in the past, which also inspired me to come here. The team will strive to deliver high-intensity and aggressive performances to achieve as many victories as possible for the supporters, and in turn, reignite their pride in the club.”

With his extensive experience and outstanding achievements, the club is confident that Kim Pan-gon is ready to shoulder the responsibility as Head Coach of the Red Giants’ senior squad and will lead the team to a higher level.
